Boats, Bears, and Bad Life Choices: The Race to Alaska

What compels a person who is afraid of the water to get in a boat for a month? I like to think it’s because bad ideas are contagious.

I had felt the pull of the Race to Alaska for years. I love adventure, and I love the idea of doing something as nonsensical as jumping on a boat with no motor and heading North. I also knew that the best stories from the race never had a good outlet, they were word of mouth tales that weren’t represented well in photographs. I loved these stories, but I knew that becoming a racer wasn’t for me. I don’t sail, I’ve never rowed, and I’m afraid of the water. All of the stories I heard at the bar kept rattling around in my head until I couldn’t let the bad idea of going to Alaska drop. I approached Race Boss Daniel Evans about coming on as a live comic artist, telling the stories of the race as they happened, thankfully he said yes, and I got to go to Alaska.

This book is a collection of the comics I created while I spent over 20 days on various boats chronicling the 2018 race. It also has an added introduction to the race, a chapter on my experiences, and a pictorial appendix of what I brought with me, making for over 30 pages of hand drawn adventure.
